What is five-axis CNC machining?
In the simplest terms, 5-axis machining involves using a CNC machine tool (computer numerical control) to move parts or tools along five different axes simultaneously. Just like CNC machining centers, 5-axis machines have three linear axes. However, 5-axis machining centers have two additional axes of rotation that can take one of two basic forms.
One type uses a rotating table, and the other type integrates the rotating shaft into the machine's headstock and spindle. This enables the machining of very complex parts, which is why the 5-axis is particularly popular in aerospace applications.
